This is where the countdown be

gins. Two hundred of my better songs, one a week, in no particular order — the number is just the week it lands on, not a ranking. We start with a song about something we used to do all the time: wait.

Do you remember waiting? Waiting for the phone to ring, waiting on the phone, waiting for the drugstore to develop film so you could find out whether the picture came out. Waiting by the radio with a cassette cued up, hoping the DJ wouldn’t talk over the intro. Waiting a week for the next episode.

Nobody called it patience. It was just how a day went. And those hours weren’t empty — that’s where we did our thinking. A kid with nothing to do and nowhere to be would eventually get around to something, What did you get around to? The waiting was the workshop and what was on the other side of the waiting felt richer because of the waiting, or did it?

“Do you remember waiting, waiting what we used to do”

Good things come to those who wait.

From the album Late Boomer.

Songs for a better me.
